Zwolle, the Netherlands, paves the world's first plastic road

Recently, Wavin and KWS collaborated to lay the world's first road made of recycled plastic in Zwolle, the Netherlands. Plastic roads can be built in just a few days, which can provide three times the life of traditional roads. Modular plastic roads eliminate safety issues such as road potholes and road cracks. The road has a permeable structure that relieves excess drainage, reduces traffic noise, and provides built-in solutions.

The concept of plastic roads was first introduced in 2013, and now the bicycle path pilot of the plastic road in Zwolle, the Netherlands has become a reality. The plastic road on the surface looks like any other bicycle lane, but under its surface is a recycled plastic structure.

Plastic roads are the first step towards a sustainable road. The prospects for plastic roads are bright, and we look forward to pushing this concept to the next level. Plastic roads have great potential as a solution to future challenges because they involve circular economy.

Headquartered in Zwolle, The Netherlands, Wavin is a leading supplier of plastic piping systems and solutions and one of the oldest companies on the market.
