Danone has announced that its packaging will be made from 100% recyclable, recyclable or compostable materials by 2025 and will attempt to help develop recycling infrastructure to increase recycling rates.
The company has set three goals to achieve a transition to a circular economy: improving product design; adding more recycled materials to the packaging; investing in efficient and efficient recycling systems.
Danone said it will remove problematic and unnecessary plastic packaging from its product portfolio and will introduce alternative plastic packaging or one-pack packaging solutions in all of its major drinking water markets by 2025.
Its Evian brand has promised that all plastic bottles will be made of 100% recycled plastic by 2025.
At present, Danone uses about 14% recycled PET (rPET) in its packaging of drinking water and other beverage products. Now Danone hopes to increase the proportion of recycled PET packaging materials to 50% by 2025.
The company will also continue to improve the use of renewable materials and bio-based materials in its packaging.
Danone has also joined the NaturALL Bottle Alliance with Nestlé, Pepsi and Origin Materials. The alliance aims to commercialize the first 75% bio-based plastic bottles by 2021. And in 2025 the first batch of plastic bottles with 100% bio-based materials will be commercial scale.
Danone also reiterated the need for an effective collection and recycling system. The company will invest in privatization projects to enhance recycling infrastructure, especially in countries that have not yet officially established recycling systems.
By 2025, Danone will be committed to supporting the collection and recycling infrastructure in its top 20 sales markets.
Emmanuel Faber, Chairman and CEO of Danone, said: 'We will take action from both global and local markets to ensure that packaging is becoming a new norm.'
