Magna develops recyclable thermoplastic composite automotive parts

Magna introduced two thermoplastic lift doors this year – the Jeep Cherokee 2019 and the Acura RDX2019. The company has announced that it will launch two more products in China by the end of this year.

Magna Exteriors President Grahame Burrow said: Magna's thermoplastic liftgate modules meet the growing demand for reduced vehicle weight, improved fuel efficiency, reduced CO2 emissions, expanded electric vehicle battery range and improved aerodynamics.

Magna's lifting doors use long glass fiber polypropylene (LGFPP) as the inner panel, using 40% reinforced glass fiber. According to Magna, the details are usually made of metal (steel or aluminum), extra LGFPP pieces, glass or Carbon reinforced mat or tape or a mixture of any of these is added to the inner panel and placed in a high stress area. The outer sheet is usually talc reinforced high modulus, low linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CLTE), thermoplastic olefin (TPO).
