European North Sea transmission operator TenneT, Norwegian transmission operator Statnett, Germany's KfW Bank's consortium plans to build a submarine line connecting the German and Norwegian power grids in the North Sea by 2020. The total length of this transmission line is 623 km, which is Europe. At present, the longest HVDC transmission line. The two ends of the line are Wilster in Germany and Tonstad in Norway, with a voltage rating of ±525kV and a total capacity of 1400MW.
The cable is produced and installed by Nexan and is constructed in multiple stages:
Within the territorial waters of Norway, a 134km submarine cable has been built
Germany's Büsum to Germany's Sylt Island, 99km submarine cable, planned to be completed in 2018
55km submarine cable from Sylt Island to the Danish waters, planned to be completed in 2019
228km submarine cable in the Danish waters, planned to be completed in 2019
On land, 53km overhead line, planned to be completed in 2019
German land, 54km buried cable, planned to be completed in 2019
The line is scheduled to be launched in 2020. By then, wind power in Germany will be linked to Norwegian hydropower, making the renewable energy market in both countries healthier and more stable.
