The Chief Secretary for administration, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, 26th appealed to all sectors of Hong Kong to join hands in supporting waste reduction and "walking and abandoning".
The government plans to implement the pilot scheme for free plastic waste recycling services, which is expected to be launched by the end of this year in 2019 years. On the same day, Mr Cheung said in his blog that the problem of waste plastics flooding in Hong Kong is imminent.
Over the past 3 years, an average of over 2000 tonnes of waste plastics have been dumped at landfills each day, accounting for about 20% of the total amount of municipal solid waste dumped in Hong Kong, and plastic bottles, or disposable plastic tableware, account for about 10% of the waste plastic disposal.
Mr Cheung said that in order to demonstrate the determination of the SAR government to recycle waste plastics and to enhance public confidence in the overall recovery and waste reduction measures, the Government planned to launch a pilot programme of 3 different districts for a period of 2 years, which is expected to be launched by the end of this year for a period of 2019 years.
