A recent study published in the JAMA publication showed that for patients with type 2 diabetes, fasting twice a week is similar to the effect of continuous diet control on glycemic control, while still achieving weight loss.

Fasting here means that the daily intake of calories is controlled at 500 to 600 calories; the so-called continuous daily diet control means that the daily intake of calories is between 1200 and 1500 calories.
Studies have shown that fasting twice a week and continuous diet control, after 1 year of persistence, the former glycosylated hemoglobin decreased by 0.3%, the latter decreased by 0.5%, the effect was similar (P = 0.65).
However, the researchers point out that fasting is usually safe for patients with type 2 diabetes, but for patients with insulin and other patients at risk of hypoglycemia, blood glucose levels need to be monitored and the dosage can be changed flexibly depending on the situation.

A total of 137 patients with type 2 diabetes were enrolled in the study, 70 of whom were fasted twice a week, and the remaining 67 continued to control their diet daily for 1 year.
In fact, this kind of fasting twice a week, also called the 5:2 diet mode, is also good for overweight healthy people.
A new study published in the British nutrition journal showed that the 5:2 diet mode is more conducive to weight loss, and can effectively reduce triglycerides, but also lower blood pressure.

In terms of weight loss, an overweight person who insists on a 5:2 diet achieves a goal of 5% reduction after 59 days, while a daily dieter takes 73 days to reach the goal.
In terms of blood pressure changes, the systolic blood pressure of the diet was reduced by 9% in 5:2, and the systolic blood pressure of the dieter was increased by 2%.
