Tesla began developing its own artificial intelligence processor about 3 years ago. In a Wednesday tweet published in local time, Musk said customers who had paid for the use of Tesla's fully automatic driving feature would get new hardware for free.
Tesla did not disclose how the hardware was upgraded.
In a subsequent push, Musk said Tesla would basically release the first software update package to customers who had purchased ' fully automatic driving ', about 4-6 months later, in sync with hardware.
Other carmakers have used the chips of Intel, Nvidia and other semiconductor manufacturers in self-driving technology, making Tesla's AI processor project a standout.
