According to new statistics released by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, global companies have purchased 7.2 GW of clean energy so far this year, exceeding the record of 5.4 GW last year.
About 60% of renewable energy purchases come from the US in 2018, up to 4.2 GW. Facebook is the largest buyer, buying more than 1.1 GW. Followed by TEL 820 MW, Norwegian Hyde Lu and Alcoa purchased 667 MW and 524 MW, respectively.
According to the report, the electricity consumed by 140 companies that have signed the RE100 program to date is estimated at 184 TWh.
If the RE100 signatories are to reach their renewable energy targets by 2030, BNEF estimates that they will need to purchase an additional 197 terawatt hours.
In 2018, it was also a record year for European companies to purchase clean energy, purchasing 1.6 GW of clean energy, compared to 1.1 GW in 2017.
Note: RE stands for renewable energy. RE100's plan is to recruit at least 100 very influential large companies from around the world to cooperate by 2020, and promise to gradually increase the proportion of renewable energy use until 100% in a certain period of time. Such an action is helping the global clean energy transformation.
