Network World Network Status Survey: Edge computing is becoming more and more important

Network World released its 8th Annual Network Status Survey. The project is based on 268 surveys from respondents covering a variety of areas, including application development, cloud services, computing hardware, data centers, data analytics and telecommunications. And the research was conducted in an audience of six IDG Communications brands (CIO, Computerworld, CSO, InfoWorld, ITworld and Network World) representing IT and security decision makers.

The survey results show that with the growth of distributed resources from wired, wireless, cloud and IoT networks, the demand for smart network edge is also growing. The importance of edge networks is increasing. The survey found that 56% of respondents Plan to perform edge calculations in their organization.

Typically, edge networks need to send data to a local device that includes a small amount of computing, storage, and network connectivity. The data is processed at the edge and sent in whole or in part to the corporate data center or infrastructure as a service (IaaS The central processing or repository in the cloud.

'Calculating is getting closer to the edge of the network, enabling organizations to analyze data in near real-time', the researchers said: 'Edge computing can reduce latency because data does not have to be traversed through the data center or cloud for processing.'

In addition to edge networks, this report also shows an increasing number of trend areas, such as Intent-Based Networking (IBN). IBN basically uses automation, analysis, intelligent software and policies to allow network administrators to define them. What do you want the network to do. Cisco, Juniper Networks, and startups such as Apstra have made IBN technology a relatively new industry buzzword. Reports show that more than half of the network professionals surveyed are familiar with intent-based networks ( 54%), and one-third of them work in companies with an IT budget of more than $1 billion.

'It's no surprise that only 3% said they have adopted an intention-based network, and another 8% have just begun to implement an intent-based network strategy, including SDN (software-defined networking), virtualization, Machine learning, model-based APIs and security tools. Up to 38% of people have not considered this strategy, but plan to start research in the next year,' Network World said.

In addition, the report also shows:

When assigning an annual budget, network professionals put safety first.

IoT has not made much progress.

As an external form of computing, the cloud is considered to be more vulnerable to security threats, and many companies are reluctant to migrate to the cloud.

Hyper-converged infrastructure is still sought after as an emerging data center technology.
