According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Darwin's weekend market produces a large number of plastic products in the garbage. There are more than 1,000 disposable plastic cups discarded on the weekend, with a lunch box of 33.34 kg.
Environmentalists say that in addition to polluting the environment, helium balloons may also block the sewers after bursting.
The Northern Territory Government official website shows that the region has banned supermarkets from offering free plastic shopping bags since September 1, 2011.
