Massachusetts Flame Retardant Ban

In Massachusetts, if the concentration of flame retardant used exceeds 1000ppm, it will be banned.

The scope includes: children's products manufactured or sold in Massachusetts, upholstered furniture, carpets and bedding.

The ban was made to protect children and families from harmful flame retardants. The state Senate unanimously passed the bill. Now it is handed over to the state House of Representatives fundraising committee.

The flame retardants covered by this legislation include TDCPP, TCEP, HBCD, TBPH, TBB, TCPP, pentaBDE, octaBDE, tetrabromobisphenol A, antimony trioxide and chlorinated paraffin.

If the ban takes effect, it will only affect products manufactured after January 1, 2019. The list of banned substances will have to be reviewed every three years.
