U.S. Department of Commerce temporarily suspends ZTE

On July 2, US Eastern Time, the US Department of Commerce issued an announcement temporarily suspending the export ban on ZTE Corporation.

The announcement stated: From the date of publication of the announcement to August 1, the export ban on ZTE Corporation was lifted under limited conditions.

Rebecca Glover, Director of Public Affairs of the US Department of Commerce, said in an inquiry from CGTN that the 7-year ban on ZTE has not been officially cancelled. The purpose of this announcement is that it has already started business with ZTE. The company, the term is one month. The products that these companies sell to ZTE must be used in the following areas:

The first is to support the continued operation of existing networks and equipment;

Second is to support existing mobile phones;

The third is for cybersecurity research and vulnerability disclosure;

There is also a condition that trading funds must be transferred between agencies authorized by the US Department of Commerce.

It is still unclear whether the 7-year ban on ZTE will be completely lifted.

U.S.’s important time node for the ban on ZTE

On April 15, 2018, the US Department of Commerce ordered the US company to ban the export of telecommunications parts and other products to ZTE for a period of seven years.

On May 13th, US President Trump said that he would give ZTE a "path to quickly restore business" and has instructed the Ministry of Commerce to "complete this matter."

The next day, US Commerce Secretary Ross said that other alternatives will be found as soon as possible. Some US lawmakers have opposed the lifting of the ban on ZTE and tried to pass the relevant bill in Congress to prevent the US government from lifting the ban on ZTE.
