Some time ago, 5G technology patents buzzed on the Internet. Along with the victory of Qualcomm, this farce finally came to an end. Recently, at the Shanghai Global Mobile Conference, American chip giant Qualcomm President Christian Roman Amon was interviewed Said that Qualcomm expects 5G data terminals will be released in December of this year in some markets. OEMs (factory manufacturers) collaborating with Qualcomm will launch full-featured 5G-enabled smartphones in March-March next year.
With the approval of the 5G standard, the industry began to promote the commercialization of 5G. Qualcomm, as a company that holds 5G patents, also began to charge manufacturers’ patent fees. In response, Amon said that Qualcomm’s patent licensing model and fees in the 5G era In the 3G/4G era, the patent agreement with the National Development and Reform Commission of China will continue to be observed.
According to the relevant 5G patent licensing framework issued earlier by Qualcomm, the Qualcomm 5G charging standard is:
1) Use Qualcomm's standard essential patents, and only support 5G mobile phones, will charge 2.275% (at the price of the whole machine) of the patent fee;
2) Use Qualcomm's standard necessary patents, and support 3G/4G/5G mobile phones, will charge 3.25% of the patent fee;
3) Use Qualcomm standard essential patents plus non-standard essential patents, and only support 5G mobile phones, will charge 4% of the patent fee;
4) The use of Qualcomm standard essential patents plus non-standard essential patents, and support for 3G/4G/5G mobile phones, will charge 5% of the patent fee.
In addition, Qualcomm also stated that the total sale price of the 5G license fee for smart phones is limited to US$400. As early as 2015, Qualcomm reached an agreement with the China Development and Reform Commission, promising to independently authorize patents in the Chinese market. The licensing model is consistent with the world. , But the standard essential patent is charged at 65% of the price of the whole machine, and the patent fee is no longer charged according to the full price of the equipment.
