IEK: Key to Micro LED breakthrough is chip

What is the trend of the development of the science and technology industry in the second half of the year in 2018? The IEK of ITRI specially selected Taiwan’s two major technology industries “Semiconductors and Displays” and held a “Prospective Seminar on Trends in the Technology Industry in the Second Half of 2018” on June 21st. .

In the "Monitor Industry and Next Generation Display Technology Micro LED Development" seminar, we will start with the development trend of display terminal products, review the trends of the global display industry in the first half of the year, the layout of international companies, and the competition between supply chains and manufacturers. The impact will be discussed. In addition, Micro LED, which is regarded as the most promising display technology of the next generation, will be discussed separately from the perspective of Micro LED's technical practice and patent layout strategy.

Lin Yanshi, an industrial analyst at the Industrial and Industrial Research Center of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, said: “The recent electrical competition has started to become a boom and more panel demands have increased; at home, OLED TVs have also been introduced due to cost reduction, and they have to be achieved. For better resolution, such as 8K, we still need to wait for the ecosystem to be more complete and the relevant content is still in short supply. In addition, we must wait until 5G lands before we can handle the problem of excessive transmission volume at a high speed. On mobile phone panels, there is only a slight increase in specifications. , The programs offered by all vendors are small, such as full-screen and under-screen fingerprint recognition. ”

Lin Yanshi thinks: “In response to the trend of medical imaging ICT, the medical field also has strict requirements for displays. The use of medical imaging capture and transmission system (PACS) digitizes images such as X-ray photography and computed tomography. The display needs to be certified separately; in addition, the process of car intelligence will also drive the demand for human-machine interfaces, such as electronic rearview mirrors, etc. The automotive products will become the new blue ocean for small and medium-sized panels and will be developed towards multiple HMIs; There is also demand for AR/VR, and its resolution is still insufficient."

Lin Yanshi stated: "The key materials of OLED are mastered in Japan and Europe and the United States, and still need to break through in the blue light-emitting materials, and toward the medium-sized size, HDR, 8K, currently on the high-end TV, is still the LCD and The competition between OLEDs, in this year's CES in the United States, also saw a transparent display. Flexible displays such as foldable and curlable technologies have begun to appear. Next-generation panels will move in the direction of high-precision, wide-gamut.

Lin Songyao, an industrial analyst at the Industrial, Industrial, and Industrial Research Center of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, said: “Micro LED technology has great challenges to overcome. The key is the chip. High-end technology, cost, and yield are the main considerations for the production of each plant. The manufacture of Micro LED will be towards group development, which is the vertical integration of the industry."

Lin Songyao continued: “For this reason, the Mini LED is likely to be the first to be launched. The major players such as SONY and Samsung all target the large-size display. Samsung intends to start selling Micro LEDs in the third quarter of 2018. 4K video wall, and SONY is also launching 8K picture quality TV this year. Currently on the full-color scheme of Micro LED, there are three kinds of RGB LED chip mixing to produce full-color effect, but also use the blue light (or UV) with Wavelength conversion materials produce red, blue, and green primary colors to achieve RGB full colorization, and related technologies still need continuous improvement."

LEDinside researcher Chu Chaochao pointed out that Micro LED is still facing layers of technical bottlenecks, including epitaxial and chip, transfer, full-colorization, power-driven, backplane, and detection and repair technology. The past is generally believed that the biggest bottleneck is Transfer technology, but with the advent of various transfer solutions, such as Pick & Place transfer, fluid assembly, laser transfer, and roller transfer, it is expected that there will be more cost-competitive technology solutions in the future. Have the opportunity to accelerate the development process of Micro LED.
