In high-performance cluster systems, improving performance is an important issue, but the more important issue is heat dissipation. The energy consumed by cooling systems can sometimes account for most of the entire system.
In the upcoming ISC 2018 International Supercomputing Conference, Lenovo will announce a set of names 'Neptune' (Neptune) The liquid cooling system uses 50°C warm water to heat the computing system. The data center's operating efficiency will increase by 50%, and the 240W+ Intel Xeon processor can be given.
In Roman mythology, Poseidon uses tridents to manage the ocean. Lenovo's Poseidon cooling system consists of three parts:DTN (Direct to Node) Thermal Radiating, RDHX Backdoor Hot-Swap and Hybrid Thermal Solution , Through Lenovo's hardware and software solutions can improve the performance of the data center, more efficient use of electricity, lower operating costs.
Lenovo's engineers have been studying the DTN liquid cooling system since 2012. Prior to this, they installed the first liquid cooling system, the IBM System X, at the Leibniz-Leisen Center (LRZ) in Munich, Germany. Reduces the power consumption of the LRZ by 40%. Now Lenovo's ThinkSystem SD650 system uses 50°C warm water to heat the CPU, PCIe, and regulators.
Since the ThinkSystem SD650 system does not have a fan and does not use chillers, their operating temperatures are lower compared to standard air-cooled units because of the higher specific heat capacity of water.
This means that customers can use 240W+ TDP Xeon Scalable processors more efficiently, while ordinary air-cooled units can only use 165W TDP processors, which can reduce energy consumption while also improving the performance of 30-40%.
RDHX is essentially a large radiator. It is connected to the back door of the cabinet, absorbs the heat discharged from the standard air-cooled system, reduces the hot air discharged into the hot aisle, reduces the air-conditioning cost, and slightly improves the system performance.
The last part of Lenovo Nept. Cooling System is a hybrid cooling system that can mix liquid cooling, air cooling and heat dissipation in the same system. Through their EAR software, they can dynamically adjust the CPU and memory according to their needs and flexibly optimize the energy consumption and performance of the workload.
