LANXESS and Hella, Germany jointly develop battery module composites

The leading specialty chemicals company LANXESS and Germany's Hellahook Group have developed a new composite material called Pocan AF4130 that can be used as a component of electric vehicle batteries. This new composite can be used as a battery management unit ( BMU) and housing material for the Battery Module's Central Management Unit (CMU).

Pocan AF4130 is a blend of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate copolymer (ASA) containing 30% (by weight) of glass fiber and a halogen-based flame retardant According to Marc Marbach, head of E&E Sales at LANXESS Performance Materials (HPM) Business Unit, the key advantages provided by this material are its significantly low warpage and shrinkage, as well as high flame retardancy. The company believes that as a car A part of a precision part of a battery system that has great potential.

LANXESS developed this composite material in just two and a half years, from initial concept to extensive testing to full production.

Hella produces automotive battery systems for a leading German company and participates in the production of BMUs and CMUs. Currently, the company is producing flat panel devices for lithium-ion battery systems for compact cars in Germany.

Low deviation

The housings of BMUs and CMUs have large, flat surfaces and have complex geometries along the edges and inside. As a result of their innovative design, it is cost-effective to use injection molding to manufacture this part. When the housing is mounted on the printing It is very important that the contact end of the connector should not bend when it is on the circuit board. Therefore, the space distance tolerance between the connector seat and the contact end cutout must be very close. Marbach explained that the size of the Pocan AF4130 in this respect Stability has considerable advantages.

UL 94 5VA and UL f1 listed

According to the specifications required for the application, LANXESS claims that the UL 94 flammability rating test of the Underwriters Laboratories confirms that the Pocan AF4130 has achieved the best V-0 (0.75 mm). Further, the UL yellow card also lists the The material achieves UL 94 5VA (1.5 mm). This performance is destined to be used for injection moulding of flame-retardant housing components. At the same time, the material has also received UL f1 (U.S. outdoor UV protection) certification and can be used outdoors. Applications include exposure to ultraviolet light and water. Marbach said: 'Therefore, our composite materials are also very likely to be used for electrical components such as opto-electric plugs and sockets.'

LANXESS said that this new composite material is highly resistant to media commonly used in automobiles, such as fuels, oils, detergents and automotive care products. This is a wide media storage test conducted by LANXESS for Hella. It has been proved that the test meets the supply specifications used by the car manufacturer LV 124.
