The report pointed out that Qualcomm and GLOBALFOUNDRIES have also been found to have the same infringement but are not required to pay any fees. Samsung has indicated that it will appeal.
KAIST is one of the top research universities in South Korea. The patent that caused infringement disputes is called FinFet. It is a kind of transistor that can be used to improve the performance of chips and reduce energy consumption.
KAIST’s KAIST IP USA subsidiary said that initially Samsung dismissed the research on FinFet technology and considered it as a short-lived trend. However, after Intel began to license related technologies and invest in the development of products, Samsung’s Attitude began to change.
Samsung claimed to the jury that this technology was jointly developed by Samsung and KAIST, denying infringement and questioning the validity of KAIST's patents.
