MIPS sold off again: Acquired by Wave Computing, an American AI company

In the field of CPUs, x86 and ARM are most widely known at the moment, and the voice of the MIPS instruction set is gradually lost. The Chinese people are familiar with such as the Loongson processor.

In fact, Imagination is the company that owns the MIPS. The latter is best known as the PowerVR GPU. Apple chips including MediaTek's SoCs often saw its solution before A10.

However, MIPS replaced the new owner.

MIPS announced on the official website Already acquired by Wave Computing, an AI company based in Silicon Valley, the latter's products are based on the MIPS architecture.

The sale of MIPS began in 2017. Imagination has been looking for potential buyers. The reason why the latter sold is that starting from A11, Apple has used its self-developed GPU and clearly stated that it no longer cooperates with Imagination. This has caused Imagination. The business is in crisis and is no longer expected by investors.

In order to focus on the GPU while reducing load, Imagination had to sell MIPS.

However, Imagination sold itself but was acquired by Canyon Bridge. MIPS was subsequently won by Tallwood Venture Capital.

In other words, this time Wave Computing was re-ordered from Tallwood.

Anandtech claims that Wave Computing is a small, unrecognized company that itself maintains its operations through venture capital. In addition, some Wave Computing employees seem to have an intersection with MIPS. For example, CEO Derek Meyer was the vice president of MIPS.

Wave Computing said that they will continue to operate the MIPS architecture and authorize it. However, selling and selling, not talking about the technology itself, may have distracted people.
