Zhang Zhongmou: Call me the father of IC design more appropriate

After Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Chairman Zhang Zhongmou established TSMC in 1987, how important is Taiwan to global semiconductor? Several of the world’s largest digital companies, including the world’s largest wafer foundry share, have beaten leaders in Samsung and Intel. Status, market value was as high as more than 6 trillion New Taiwan dollars better than Intel.

TSMC’s market share in wafer foundry has grown for 8 consecutive years. Last year, the company’s market share reached 56%, ranking the highest in the industry. Last year, revenue reached a record high of US$32.16 billion and grew 9% year-on-year. Two times more than 5 times of lattice core, the market rate of lattice core rate is only 9.4% at present. Although Samsung is catching up with TSMC in advanced process, the global market share is only 7.7%. There is still a large gap between TSMC and TSMC.

As foundries solve the production problem for the IC design industry, the efficiency created by the division of labor through design and manufacturing provides IC design industry with more competitiveness. Before Zhang Zhongmou was honored as the father of foundry, however, Zhang Zeng said that instead of calling him the founder father, it would be better to say that the father of the IC design industry is even more appropriate.
