UNEP Releases Report Promoting Development of Disposable Plastic Alternatives

To commemorate World Environment Day on June 5th, the artists prepared a device made of plastic waste in 12 exhibitions across Asia.

The UN Environment Agency released a report on June 1 st, proposing that before the World Environment Day on June 5 this year, it introduced a one-time plastic alternative whose theme was to “conquer plastic pollution”. UN Environment Programme (UN) (Environment) announced at the beginning of 2017 'Marine Plastics War', a 127-page report that aims to evaluate alternatives to traditional fossil fuel plastics and help 'break global dependence on disposable plastics'.

The Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, Eric Solheim, said: 'The shift from disposable plastics to sustainable plastics is an investment in the long-term future of our environment. The world needs solutions, not disposable plastics.' The agency stated that 'eliminating all plastics in society is neither possible nor desirable' and stated that in certain application areas, such as medical fields, plastics are indispensable.

The main author of the report, Peter Kossa, said: 'This report is intended to encourage society to question our current use of plastics, and consider other methods, especially for those items that have single-use characteristics, such as packaging. Packaging and other Single-use items bring a lot of plastic waste to the ocean.

At the time this report came out, the G7 conference held in Canada from June 8th to June 9th was also expected to discuss the issue of plastics and marine pollution. The Canadian government has stated that it hopes to take advantage of this year’s chance to hold the rotating G7 presidency in a large-scale industrial democracy. The internal composition of the group of seven nations raises this issue.

In addition, this year's World Environment Day (June 5th) is focused on plastic contamination and plans to organize events around the world. The UN report provides 25 case studies, including traditional alternative methods such as paper and cotton, updated organisms Polymers and other materials, sources of these materials include algae, fungi and plants. The report also stated that there are 'significant commercial and employment opportunities' in the development of new materials.
