Microsoft Seeks to Acquire GitHub: The First Round of $5 Billion

Github is a world-renowned hosting platform for open source and proprietary software projects. It has 23 million users worldwide and serves 1.5 million organizations, including Microsoft.

According to Business Insider, Microsoft has approached GitHub for possible acquisition.

According to statistics, GitHub’s subscription revenue announced last fall was US$200 million, of which US$110 million came from corporate users. In addition, GitHub’s valuation reached US$2 billion in financing activities in 2015.

However, the current progress of the negotiations is that GitHub quoted 5 billion US dollars (about 32.1 billion yuan), Microsoft feels a bit high.

Winning GitHub will help Microsoft promote its own IDE tool, Visual Studio. In addition, Azure Cloud and even AI-related work will benefit.

According to CNBC, Microsoft and GitHub had originally finalized a $350 million marketing partner contract. As a result, Microsoft began to consider the possibility of a full-scale acquisition.

Earlier in 2016, Microsoft was also reported to win GitHub, but the latter repeatedly denied it.

One of the key messages to be said is that Chris Wanstrath, founder and CEO of GitHub, resigned 10 months ago, and the company’s management did not find a suitable replacement. BI revealed that former chief executive of Xamarin, Nat Friedman, may replace this. Position, if he drops air to GitHub, or will help the parties to the acquisition negotiations.
