| DWK Life Sciences will demonstrate on ACHEMA 2018 a new laboratory appliance product made using metal 3D printing.  3D Printed Four-Port Connector Cap DWK Life Sciences is part of the DURAN brand and is known for developing innovative glass laboratory vessel products. The company has been successfully using metal 3D printing for the first time to design a fully functional 4-port GL 45 cap connector cover. Made of medical grade 316L stainless steel. 'Developing new laboratory vessels, especially glass products, has traditionally been a slow process.' Previously, the stainless steel connector GL 45 caps were manufactured using conventional machining and welding processes and weighed more than 150 grams of similar welded parts, but now the 3D printed connector weighs only 50 grams, and weight is reduced by more than two-thirds. Each batch takes approximately 51 hours to print using the EOS system and uses a software controlled 400 watt laser to melt the stainless steel powder into the exact shape defined by the product. The material is immediately cooled and the connectors are completed using physical and electrochemical processes.
