Germany nova-institut GmbH, Hurth, has published a new comprehensive biobased polymer market and trend forecast report entitled 'Bio-based Building Blocks and Polymers - Global Production Capacity and Trend Forecast 2017-2022' This report was prepared by the International Biopolymers Expert Group headed by nova Institute. Its authors are from Asia, North America and Europe.
This report contains comprehensive information on the development of bio-based polymer capabilities from 2011 to 2022, a total of 17 blocks and 15 polymers as well as individual polymer producers. In addition, this report also analyzed each block and Polymer market development.
Bio-based polymers are almost as powerful as petrochemical polymers
The productivity of bio-based polymers continues to grow at a rate of about 3% to 4% per year, roughly the same as for petrochemical polymers. Therefore, the market share of bio-based polymers in the polymer market remains around 2%. However, the individual development of different bio-based polymers varies greatly.
Some bio-based polymers are actually collapsing (such as bio-PET) compared to previous predictions, but many still show the ability to continue or slightly increase, and some even show a significant growth trend (such as PLA). For some bio-based polymers, such as PHA, PEF, bio-PE and bio-polypropylene, the future prospects are quite optimistic.
Overall, Due to the low price of crude oil, lack of political support, and insufficient utilization rate, the market environment of bio-based polymers is still full of challenges. So far, the biodegradability of some bio-based polymers has not produced a real global advantage.
