After Porsche became the first company in the world to introduce blockchain technology into the automotive industry in March, the top four auto giants have also deployed in groups.
Recently, the four giants of BMW, Ford, Renault and General Motors announced the formation of an alliance to bring blockchain technology to automobile manufacturing and operations.
The alliance launched a 'Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative' (MOBI) with about 30 companies participating.
In addition to the four automakers, founding members include IBM and Bosch. Auto parts makers Bosch and ZF, large companies (Accenture and IBM), blockchain industry group (Consensys, Hyperledger) have also become an important role. As a result, MOBI has become the largest ever devoted to the application of blockchain technology in the automotive industry.
The alliance aims to accelerate the adoption of and support for cryptocurrency related technologies such as Bitcoin in the automotive sector, from automatic payments to ride sharing applications.
'This is a structural change in the field of science and technology, which may undermine the development of traditional technology into the car's development plan. 'BKCM founder and CEO Brian Kelly said.
Currently, Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft have already adopted connected cars. Amazon has expanded Alexa's business to cars, Microsoft Azure has an automotive system, and Apple has provided Carplay for iOS. At the same time, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is passing. Its subsidiary Waymo develops self-driving cars.
Kelly said that the most important part of these initiatives is the data. 'The MOBI is making final efforts and making these data autonomous, allowing consumers to control their data ownership rights.' He said.
Considered a 'decentralized' technology, proponents believe that the blockchain cannot be cracked. In this mode, hackers need to crack multiple systems to change any information, thus making the data almost undisturbed.
But there is always a lot of doubt. In a recent column, economist Nouriel Roubini called the blockchain one of the most overdone technologies in history.
Although the technology has innumerable uses, Bitcoin is one of the earliest applications. According to CoinDesk's data, in the first three months of 2018, the value of cryptocurrency rose by almost half, and it jumped more than 1,300 percent.
The MOBI Alliance is headed by Chris Ballinger, a veteran of the automotive industry. He left him last month as CFO and Director of Mobile Services.
