Which kind of brake pad is better | The disc brake must be better than the drum brake? The more caliper piston, the better?

With one foot brake, the booster pump will magnify the motion of your foot, push the brake fluid in the master cylinder, transmit the force through the tubing to the piston in the caliper, and then clamp the brake disc with the brake shoe to slow down the vehicle.

This set of the most simple hydraulic transmission principle actually carries the most important role in safe driving. It is even called the “part of the most unreliable part.” But before the conversion, you must also understand some basic knowledge of the braking system. .

Disc brakes must be better than drum brakes?

When the brake is applied to the brake, the oil of the master cylinder will pass through the tubing and fill the cavities on both sides of the caliper, so that the piston pushes the brake pads to clamp the rotating brake disc, causing friction and deceleration.

The drum brake also needs to transmit the hydraulic force to the pistons on both sides of the wheel cylinder. The piston pushes and presses the brake shoes on both sides and causes friction with the inner wall of the brake drum to slow down.

All in all, disc brakes have the features of fast heat dissipation, light weight, quick braking, easy adjustment, high temperature resistance at high load, stable braking effect, and less influence by external environmental factors. However, disc brakes also have it. Disadvantages, the first is that the manufacturing cost is significantly higher than the drum brake. In addition, the durability is not as good as the drum brake.

Even if all of the disc brakes, brake discs and calipers, and the brake pump design will directly affect the braking effect of a car, it is not possible to judge the braking effect based on the brake type and structure alone; Under the braking conditions, the force of the drum brake is not weaker than the disc brake, and the vehicle brake system using the drum brake is easier to install and maintain.

Is the larger the brake disc, the better the performance?

Many people think that increasing the diameter of the brake disc can increase the braking torque and thus increase the braking force. In fact, this argument is not entirely correct. After all, after increasing the brake disc, it also involves the bridge code and brake pads. Matching, brake calipers need to be replaced if necessary, otherwise the effect is minimal.

Can the caliper piston brake as much as possible?

As the caliper piston increases, the volume of the caliper will increase. We all know that the oil pressure in the caliper comes from the brake master cylinder. With the output pressure of the master pump constant, the volume of the caliper cavity is larger and the entire closure is completed. The pressure in the oil circuit is smaller, so the original four-piston caliper upgrade six-piston is often not as good as the original, this is the reason. Therefore, when upgrading the caliper, if necessary, you need to upgrade the brake master cylinder.

What does the brake fluid symbol represent?

The brake fluids of general models are mostly DOT4 specifications, which are basically mineral oil-based brake fluids. If there are additives that can suppress excessive temperature and excessive moisture absorption, the stability of the braking performance can be greatly improved. The DOT5 specification brakes The liquid belongs to the race brake fluid, which is made of high-cost silicone oil base oil. It has high temperature resistance and is not easy to absorb water. It can withstand the high temperature brought by strong braking force.

However, the DOT5 brake fluid is not suitable for ordinary braking systems because the silicone oil base will corrode the brake piston oil seal inside the brake system, the brake oil pipe rubber joint, etc., causing brake fluid leakage and braking. Problems such as a decrease in piston pressure will cause the brake system to fail to work properly. If daily walking and occasional track days are to be used, use DOT4.

In fact, many people do not need to change the brakes at all. Only replacing a set of advanced brake pads can solve the problem of insufficient braking force. When refitting the brake pads, pay attention to the working temperature of the brake pads.
