U.S. Entry Search Standard Upgrade: Electronic Equipment/Social Software Checked

Those who go to the United States should pay attention. According to the Beijing Morning Post report, the U.S. Transport Security Administration stated that it will require foreign airports to follow the U.S. domestic security inspection procedures to independently inspect the electronic devices carried by U.S. passengers.

The Transportation Security Administration adopted stricter security measures at US domestic airports since July last year to further ensure flight safety and prevent electronic equipment from catching fire or exploding. Passengers are required to remove electronic equipment that is larger than mobile phones in their carry-on baggage and to be scanned separately.

The New York Times website previously reported that applicants for US immigration visas will be required to provide social media information, which will expand coverage to more than 14 million people who apply for non-immigrant visas each year.

Although the official did not specify which social media platforms will be affected, this proposal is likely to involve the largest number, such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. Estimates may also include overseas social media platforms, such as China’s QQ, Weibo and WeChat and Russia's VK.

The report also mentioned that in addition to social media information, visa applicants will also be required to provide past passport numbers, telephone numbers and email addresses. It is reported that the new requirements of the US Department of State will not be effective immediately. The proposal has a 60-day public comment period. The end time is May 29.
