Canary Wharf, an important financial district in the east of London, has installed the UK's first publicly available deposit refund program.
The financial district stated that this machine is part of the 'breaking the plastic habit' campaign.
Prior to this, the British government announced the start of the deposit refund program in March.
This automatic machine uses a 360-degree scanning identification system to identify, isolate, collect, and dispose of waste beverage containers.
Currently, only 43% of the 13 billion plastic bottles sold in the UK each year are recycled, and 700,000 plastic bottles are discarded each day. Germany introduced a similar deposit return program in 2003, and 99% of plastic bottles Has been recycled.
Canary Wharf stated that in the next 12 months, it will initiate a campaign to further reduce the use of disposable plastics, and will focus on solving plastic pollution problems.
