Verizon Targets OTT Video in 5G Market

According to foreign media reports, Matt Ellis, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Verizon, said that Verizon intends to introduce OTT video products in the second half of this year when it provides 5G services in 3 to 5 residential markets.

However, Ellis declined to disclose the type of OTT service that Verizon is considering, only to call it a non-homogeneous product. This means that it will be somewhat different from the "simplified" TV service package already in operation on the US market. These existing operating services include Sling TV, DirecTV Now, PlayStation Vue, Hulu Live and YouTube TV.

Verizon is currently cautious in the OTT space because of Verizon’s frequent setbacks in the next-generation video market. Earlier this year, Verizon contracted many hard-core FiOS IPTV services; in addition, its Go90 OTT has never truly taken off. Because of its cautiousness. Sexuality, Verizon has become the only performer in the pay TV field in the United States that does not primarily provide 'simplified' TV packages.

Sire TV and AT&T's DirecTV Now are the market leaders; Comcast and Charter Communications also offer 'simplified' TV packages. AT&T recently announced the launch of the sports program's free 'AT&T Watch' streaming service. The price is only $15 a month.

According to media reports, OTT's industry situation is very serious for Verizon, Verizon's rivals continue to erode FiOS video users, Verizon lost 22,000 FiOS video users in the first three months of this year.

In addition, Comcast cooperated with NBC Universal several years ago, and competitor AT&T is also fighting with the government about Time Warner's lawsuit. But just as Verizon executives had previously done, Ellis almost ruled out Verizon’s acquisition of a content giant. Any move by the company. Despite all the rumors in the market, Ellis said that Verizon had no plans to do major media transactions.
