Hangzhou Customs seized 460 tons of U.S. imports | 'Ocean trash'

The reporter learned from the Hangzhou Customs on the 10th that a number of “foreign garbage” imported from the United States have been seized recently. After being identified, the batch of imported waste paper weighing up to 469 tons generally contained excessive inclusions and was classified as non-importable solid waste.

According to the Hangzhou Customs Case Officer, this batch of waste paper imported from the United States totalled 40 TEUs. When the Customs officers checked, they found that there was a lot of scrap metal, waste beverage bottles, etc., suspected of being 'foreign garbage'.

The subsequent appraisal confirmed the judgment of customs officers. The content of general impurities, such as waste plastics, in the waste paper used in this batch of waste paper reached 5.28%, which exceeds the relevant regulations in China and belongs to solid wastes that are prohibited from import. Currently, the customs has ordered and supervised the enterprises as soon as possible. This batch of waste paper was shipped out of the country.

Since March of this year, Hangzhou Customs has launched a comprehensive 'Blue Sky 2018' campaign under the unified deployment of the General Administration of Customs. It has strictly sealed the 'foreign waste' smuggling channel into the country and focused on cracking down on the wastes listed in the Catalogue of Prohibited Imports of Solid Waste.
