March 25: Acceptance by 18 experts from China University of Science and Technology, China Institute of Atomic Energy, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Institute of High Energy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Physics, Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Tsinghua University, etc. The expert group identified and accepted China's spallation neutron source project. After completion, China's spallation neutron source became the first in China and the world’s fourth pulsed spallation neutron source, filling the domestic pulse neutron application field. Blankness provides powerful research methods for basic research and high-tech development in China's materials science and technology, life sciences, resources and environment, new energy, etc. It is of great significance to meet the country's major strategic needs and resolve frontier scientific issues.
China's spallation neutron source has achieved a series of major technological achievements in accelerators, target stations, and spectrometers through independent innovation and integrated innovation. The localization rate of equipment exceeds 90%, which has significantly improved China's magnet, power supply, and detectors. The technological level and independent innovation capability of relevant industries in electronics and other fields have enabled China to achieve a major leap in the field of high-current proton accelerators and neutron scattering. The technology and comprehensive performance have entered the ranks of similar international devices.
China's spallation neutron source was constructed by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The unit was jointly established by the Institute of Physics and started construction in September 2011. The construction period is 6.5 years and the total investment is about RMB 2.3 billion. The main construction includes a linear accelerator. A fast-circulation synchrotron, a target station, and a three-stage neutron spectrometer for neutron scattering experiments consist of a variety of high-, precision-, and sharp-point devices.
China's spallation neutron source is like a 'super microscope' and is a 'country of gravity' for studying the microstructure of matter, in areas such as materials science and technology, life sciences, physics, chemical engineering, resource environment, new energy and many other fields. With wide application prospects, it will provide strong support for our country to produce high-level scientific research results, and provide an advanced research platform for solving many bottlenecks of national sustainable development and national strategic needs. The device will become a national science and technology under construction in Guangdong Province. The core unit of the Industrial Innovation Center has made significant contributions to the technological development and industrial upgrading of the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Bay Area.
In August 2017, China's spallation neutron source hit the target for the first time and obtained neutron beam. In November 2017, it reached the acceptance index of the target beam power. During the Spring Festival of 2018, the researchers worked overtime and continued to perform stressful debugging operations. During the period, the accelerator operated stably, and beam power and continuous operation time were the new heights since tuning. The first three neutron spectrometers, namely the universal powder diffractometer, the small-angle scatterometer and the multi-functional reflector, all successfully completed the sample experiments. Powder diffractometer has completed two high-level user experiments.
After the completion of the spallation neutron source in China, it will give full play to the role of three spectrometers in materials science, life sciences, condensed matter physics and chemistry, and provide an international advanced research platform for the majority of users. At the same time, in order to give full play to The role of the device is to meet the urgent needs of neutron scattering research and application users. The expert committee recommends that: China's spallation neutron source should reach the design target as soon as possible to achieve stable operation, and start the second phase of the project as soon as the device passes the acceptance, and start the follow-up spectrometer. Construction, further enhance the beam power.
