China's Smartphone Continued Winter: First Quarter Shipments Down 27% YoY

Recently, the China Institute of Information and Communication Technology released the "Report on the Operation of the Domestic Mobile Phone Market in March 2018." The report shows that from January to March of 2018, China's smartphone shipments totaled 81.87 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 27.0%.

From the data point of view, the performance of Chinese smart phones in the first quarter of 2018 continued the winter situation in 2017. According to the data previously released by the China Institute of Information and Communications, in December 2017, China’s smartphone shipments were 40.361 million. First, the overall situation of the mobile phone market

The overall domestic shipments continued to decline. In March 2018, the domestic mobile phone market shipped 30.185 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 27.9%. From January to March 2018, the domestic mobile phone market shipped 87.307 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 26.1%. .

The decrease in the number of new models listed in the domestic market decreased. In March 2018, 80 new models were listed, which fell by 37.5% year-on-year. From January to March 2018, 206 new models were launched, a year-on-year decrease of 8.4%.

4G Netcom mobile phone shipments accounted for a continuous growth. In March 2018, 40.8G handsets shipped 28.085 million units, down 28.7% year-on-year, of which 4G Netcom handsets accounted for 94.0%; 4G launched 67 new models, year-on-year Respectively decreased by 40.2%, of which, 4G Netcom mobile phones accounted for 71.6%. From January to March 2018, 49.8G mobile phones were shipped, which was a decrease of 27.1% year-on-year, of which 4G Netcom mobile phones accounted for 92.5%; 4G listed new machines Type 156, down 17.5% year-on-year, respectively, including 4G Netcom mobile phone accounted for 75.6%.

Second, domestic and international brand composition

Domestic branded mobile phone shipments accounted for almost 90% of the total. In March 2018, domestic branded mobile phone shipments totaled 26.995 million units, down 29.0% year-on-year, accounting for 89.4% of domestic mobile phone shipments during the same period; 78 new models were listed. This represented a decrease of 36.6% year-on-year, which accounted for 97.5% of the total number of new mobile phone models listed in the domestic market during the same period. From January to March of 2018, domestic shipments of branded mobile phones totaled 75.864 million, down 27.8% year-on-year, accounting for 86.8% of domestic mobile phone shipments during the same period. Listed on the new model 190 models, a year-on-year decrease of 10.8%, accounting for 92.2% of the new mobile phone models listed in the domestic market during the same period.

Third, the development of smart phones

Smartphone shipments accounted for over 90% of total shipments. In March 2018, smartphone shipments totaled 28.083 million units, down 28.6% year-on-year, accounting for 93.0% of domestic mobile phone shipments during the same period. The new models listed were mainly Android phones. In March 2018, 68 new models of smartphones were on the market, down 37.0% year-on-year, accounting for 85.0% of the total new models of mobile phones in the same period, of which 67 were supported by Android operating systems. In January-March 2018, 158 models of new smartphones were on the market, a year-on-year decrease of 15.1%, accounting for 76.7% of the new models in the same period, of which 152 models supported the Android operating system.
