Sina Technology News Beijing time on April 3 evening news, Taiwan senior researcher Digitimes Research Luke Lin (Luke Lin) quoted the source of the upstream supply chain today said that Apple (hereinafter referred to as 'Apple') is developing Micro LED display panel.
Luke Lin said that Apple also developed micro LED display panels for small-sized devices and large-size devices. Among them, the small-sized micro LED display panels are based on silicon backplanes, developed jointly by Apple and TSMC, and are suitable for Apple Watch and augmented reality ( AR) Wearable devices.
Among them, the size of the micro LED panel for future Apple Watch smart watches is 1.3 inches to 1.4 inches, while the micro LED panel size for AR wearable devices (possibly AR glasses) is 0.7 inches to 0.8 inches.
In addition, Apple is still developing large-size micro LED panels based on TFT backplanes, mainly for large-scale devices, and even larger than the MacBook's screen size.
Luke Lin also said that the micro-LED panel of the Apple Watch smart watch is expected to be produced in the second half of the year or 2019. Large-size micro-LED panels are expected to be produced in volume in 2019 or later, and used in AR wearable devices. LED panel production time has not been determined.
Luke Lin believes that the initial micro LED panel will only be used in high-end Apple Watch smart watches, not all models. Luke Lin expects, compared with Apple Watch's current use of OLED panels, micro LED panel costs To be 400% to 600% higher.
Luke Lin’s news from the upstream supply chain vendors was consistent with an earlier report by Bloomberg. The report quoted insiders as saying that Apple had a secret near the company’s California headquarters. Manufacturing plant, which is currently producing micro LED screens on a small scale, mainly for testing purposes.
According to industry sources, the purpose of Apple's move is obvious, mainly to reduce the dependence on Samsung's screen. Currently, Apple's electronic products mainly use Samsung's screen. In order to be able to control their products to a greater extent, Apple has continued in recent years. Invest in new areas to reduce the reliance on parts manufacturers.
