Korea Electronic Communication Research Institute develops 5G Wi-Fi seamless switching technology

The Korea Electronic Communications Research Institute (ETRI) has developed a new core network technology that allows users to seamlessly switch between 5G networks and Wi-Fi networks. ETRI began researching the technology in 2015 and is already Korea has applied for 30 related patents domestically and globally.

It is understood that currently 4G LTE, 3G networks and fixed-line networks operate independently, which means that users need to manually decide which network to use. However, this leads to situations, such as on smartphones, when we are watching videos via Wi-Fi. In the live broadcast, the network is suddenly interrupted, but the video will also be interrupted or delayed when switching to the LTE network.

ETRI's technical support automatically redirects traffic from 5G to Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi to 5G. When network service quality is poor, users do not need to manually select an access point. At the same time, the technology can also be used in multiple services. Distribute traffic and optimize transmission speed.

It is reported that 3GPP is advancing this technology, although it is still in the conceptual stage. The standardization process of this technology is expected to start from June of this year and be completed by 2020.

South Korea plans to conduct 5G spectrum auctions in June this year. 5G networks are expected to be commercially available in 2019.
