February 20, Samsung Electronics announced on the official website, the company's ultra-large-capacity SAS solid state drive has entered mass production, the hard drive model PM1643, its capacity up to 30.72 TB.
Samsung said the hard drive was developed for the next-generation enterprise storage system using Samsung's latest V-NAND technology that combines 32 1TB NAND Flash memories, each of which uses 16 A stack of V-NAND chips, which makes it possible to store 5,700 5GB high-definition movies on a hard drive that is as large as 2.5 inches.
In addition to capacity improvements, PM1643 transmission performance has also been significantly improved, almost double the size of the previous generation of ultra-large-capacity SAS SSDs based on 12Gb / s SAS interface, PM1643 disk random read speed and write speed reached 400000 IOPS and 50000 IOPS with continuous read speeds up to 2100MB / s and 1700MB / s; random read performance is four times that of a traditional 2.5-inch SATA SSD and three times the sequential read performance.
In order to achieve the above results, Samsung has made great efforts in the design of controllers, DRAM packaging and collaborative software.
Among them, the PM1643 uses an efficient controller architecture that packs the controllers used by nine previous generation high-capacity solid state drives into one, and it also employs Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology that interconnects multiple 8Gb DDR4 chip to create a total of 10 4GB TSV DRAM package, a total of 40GB of DRAM.This is the first time TSV-DRAM technology is applied to the solid state drive.Of course, in terms of software, this solid state drive also provides data recovery, power down Protection and other functions.
Samsung has begun initial production of the 30.72TB SSD in January of this year and will later extend its product line to 15.36TB, 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB and 800GB later this year.
