The incident was caused by Uber's acquisition of Otto, an autonomous driving company founded by former Google engineer Anthony Levandowski. Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, sued Uber in February 2017 and claimed that the conspiracy to steal and use driverless car design secrets as part of the Otto deal Especially known as Lidar, or light detection and ranging systems to guide autonomous vehicles, Uber fired Levandowski in May last year in part because of a reluctance to cooperate in the investigation of allegations of Waymo. Waymo is still currently preparing to arbitrate Levandowski, but Uber is willing to compensate Levandowski for possible legal trial.
