At the 2018 Winter Olympics, Dow Polyurethane will play an important role in the Olympic Village and in some buildings.
Pyeongchang, South Korea, will be hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics from February 9 to February 25, and Pyeongchang February temperatures average just above zero.
Dow's polymeric MDI products are used to make some PIR insulation at the Olympic Village and to provide drivers with insulation of walls and roofs in modular houses that will be available throughout the host city Transport passengers travel.
The houses are made of panels that contain wooden panels and insulating foam, and they can be built in a matter of hours at less than half the cost. Dow said it consumes only half of its energy compared to expanded polystyrene structures. Added that 98% of the polyurethane structure is recyclable.
Philip Oh, Business Director for Dow Olympics & Motion Solutions Asia Pacific, said: 'We are working with South Korean companies such as SY Panel to develop the next generation of cost-effective and sustainable modular houses that use insulation technology.'
'Some mattresses at Olympic Village' and 'Some hotel's mattresses' will use polyols,' Dow said.
Philip Oh said: 'By working with Alfim and some of the Serim TTCs, we are able to provide athletes with a good night's rest basis.'
