Italy is Europe's third-largest paint and coatings market with a very fragmented market that makes it difficult to obtain reliable data, but available data suggest that architectural coatings are on the rise, notably wall coverings.
The Italian architectural coatings market is slowly recovering
Due to the fragmented market in Italy, obtaining representative and reliable figures is a major challenge, no doubt due to the active involvement of a large number of companies in this area, which are estimated by a panel of experts in the field of nearly 600 architectural and decorative coatings manufacturers covering micro-enterprises And large multinationals. But, most paint manufacturers are not affiliated with any association, which is why only limited information is formally confirmed. In order to solve this problem and to identify the representative of the department, in early 2010 the Italian construction The paint industry set up a new association called Assovernici.
The association consists of manufacturers of decorative architectural coatings, whose membership exceeds one-third of the Italian architectural coatings market and can be considered as a representative starting point for statistical compilation given the fragmented market.
According to statistics by Assovernici, the market sold 495 million liters worth 1.16 billion euros in 2016. The average selling price at that time was 2.35 euros per liter, the lowest figure since 2010. The price per liter at that time was still 2.28 Euro reached the highest price in 2012 (€ 2.42). Production of Italian architectural coatings has also been declining since 2010. Seven years ago they produced less than 650 million liters, a figure that has not exceeded since then.
In sales, it recorded the highest value of 1.53 billion euros in 2011. Sales dropped below 1.3 billion euros in 2012, which means a very small drop in 2016. Assovernici expects sales to remain essentially unchanged by 2017, To 498 million liters, sales are expected to increase 20 million euros to 1.18 billion euros, the price per liter will rise to 2.37 euros (+0.02 euros.) Although these increases are only insignificant, but they show that the trend is now up again.
Wall decorative coatings account for about two-thirds of the architectural coatings market
The Association also counted sales of wall-mounted decorative coatings, with a volume of 319.5 million liters in 2016, which is relatively stable compared with the previous two years, of which about 64.5% is water-based paint. The interior and exterior paint reached a peak of 384 million liters in 2010 , The association is expected to slightly increase this year to 322 million liters.
Interior wall coatings sales of up to 600 million euros in 2011, but only two years later, the interior wall paint hit a record low of 494 million euros in 2013. It is expected to slightly increase to 510 million euros in 2017. Since 2011, The average sales price per liter of interior wall paint remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 1.59 and 1.57 euros, and the association said it expects this figure to remain at 1.58 euros by 2017.
Exterior paint has dropped to its lowest level in seven years
Sales of exterior wall coatings in the Italian market reached 220 million euros in 2016. Sales in this area have been declining to its lowest level in seven years since 2011 (318 million euros), and the association expects results to stabilize for 2017 With an estimated sales of 225 million euros, with production (in terms of production volume) in 2010 (136 million liters) and 2011 (139 million liters) still the strongest period for the reporting period and sales have been declining to 102 million liters (2016) Assovernici expects no increase in exterior wall paint in 2017, maintaining at 101 million liters.
The average price per liter of exterior wall paint in 2016 dropped from 2.32 euros in 2012 to 2.16 euros in 2016. However, the Association predicts that prices will rise by more than 3% in 2017 to 2.23 euros.
