WAAMpeller: The world's first ship-certified 3D printed ship propeller

After some experiments and prototypes, the world's first BV-certified 3D printed ship propeller, WAAMpeller, was unveiled at Damen Shipbuilding Group headquarters in the Netherlands.

This groundbreaking project is being built by the Dutch shipbuilding group Promarin, a German propeller manufacturer, RAMLAB, an augmented manufacturing laboratory in Port Rotterdam, software giant Autodesk and the French Federation of Shipping (BV). Promarin is responsible for the three-bladed propeller Preliminary design; RAMLAB is responsible for the main manufacturing stages of making workpieces using innovative arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology; Autodesk offering software, robotic and additive manufacturing support; and Damien providing a Stan Tug 1606 towboat to help test Propeller and provide key research and development experience.

The success of this project shows the promise of 3D printing technology in maritime space Alland Castelein, CEO of RAMLab, said the project shows the shipbuilding industry the potential of 3D printing technology for ship parts.
