Despite the vastly different dimensions of culture, education and social ethos, there seems to be no difference between the positive and negative effects of the 'engineer' occupation in both the western and the eastern world; The causes of differences in numbers (too complicated), but also those who regardless of any scientific basis or from personal prejudice theory aside ... non-related sex, as an engineer you, why you are into this career?
Graduated from Hsinchu Jiao Tong University with a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, Taiwan RF wafer design Wang Qi, general manager of Richwave (Richwave), from high school was established toward the field of science and engineering Development ambition, starting from the enthusiasm for physics, and then into the ranks of IC technology research and development, and now has become a leader in stock-listed companies, along the way firmly toward their own choice and set goals, and not because She retreated or compromised as a handful of women in engineering.
In addition to embracing the courage of determined aspirations, Wang Qi is most impressively her clear idea; at first glance is a gentle and few words of traditional oriental women, but talked about her focus on R & D technology and business career History, well-defined narration, serious and confident eyes will make the audience unable to bear the unique charm of this 'science and technology female female', and perhaps this is the same charm that has deeply attracted her for thirty years The other half - Legislative Council, chairman of Ma Dejun, two from the campus to meet, a total of family, work together to create a career, the future will continue to work together to make Taiwan's RF technology strength world-renowned!
The following is a EE Times in order to 'science and technology women's force: perseverance' feature reports, interview with the gentle and determined outstanding female engineers interview record:
It is no accident that you become a good female engineer or a company leader. What are your motivations for choosing a specialist area? Are you facing any difficulties or resistances that may change your direction along the way? What is the reason to support you in the end? ?
I had a soft spot for physics from high school. I also studied very well. Then I chose 'Group A' (science and engineering department) for university entrance exams. I studied electronics at the university. After graduation, I studied in the United States and got a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. Into the semiconductor industry, can always adhere to the development of electronic technology, the real power comes from my personal physics, exploration and analysis of a variety of phenomenal interest in the mechanism; and IC design is actually the core energy semiconductor physics, the transistor Characteristics of understanding, so my current career for me is not just a company, or simply because of the passion for physics.
This enthusiasm for physics supported me in investing in basic transistors and I was struggling to get the full benefits of semiconductor technology to the point where it was visible to the public; but after working for a few years, I found myself working as a small engineer , Can concentrate on research and development, because someone helped you create an environment, but with the deeper qualifications, there is a responsibility to provide such an environment for future generations, but if you do not have a team, or even a company, there are many want In fact, things can not be done.
Because of this, I've been leading the team since the 1990s, and then have to face several times whether or not to take over the decision of a higher executive. Although being a leader really prevented me from devoting my full attention to research, I realized that in this industry, Can not lead a group of like-minded partners, to expand the scale of a study, even if I personally can produce very good research results, or can not really make such a result, so I chose to be the leader, and it seems I The leadership and coordination skills are not bad, and my team is working with me in the direction I think right.
Do you have a model or mentor in your career development and what help did their mentoring or life experiences do for you?
Different stages of my life have different 'elegant people' to help me find out what they have 'treasure', and one of the most affected me is my mentor when studying for master's and doctoral programs at the University of Maryland, Professor Hung C. 'Jimmy' Lin; Professor Ling was the first Chinese scientist to invest in electronic technology research in the United States. After receiving the IEEE JJ Ebers Award and IEEE Honorary Fellow, his teaching inspired me greatly .
Professor Ling encourages us not to just do common problems in our research, to think creatively, to explore the essence of things in depth, find problems and solve problems; such a spirit has always affected me to get employed, whether in the United States or Is back to Taiwan, and now I run my own company, innovation and product differentiation is our important foundation.
In the field of engineering, women are still a minority; some of the differences between men and women, whether it is right or wrong, are still one of the reasons why men and women in science and technology industries are less; and in making your own performance and achievements in this What are the challenges you face in the environment and how can you overcome these challenges?
From the Department of Electronics, University to later enter the workplace, I am the environment has always been a minority of women; I did not therefore feel the differential treatment or obstacles, but also very accustomed to such a situation. In fact, when studying in the United States, employment, the Chinese are also a minority Ethnic groups, in that diverse environment, gender is less likely to be the focus of attention, and I can adapt well.
Natural differences between men and women there, I think women will take care of men than men, understanding of others personality, but very suitable as a team leader; and women's care both in scientific research or in the general workplace is also an advantage, but women Often educated to show gentle virtues, which is a courtesy with people, should not be an obstacle; for the right thing to do, the decision should be made, female friends should brave in the end, the attitude can be gentle, but not because of Care about the ideas of others easily give up or compromise.
Women usually face the responsibility of burning both family needs and career achievements. How can you balance the problem?
In this regard, I feel quite lucky and I do not feel the need to take into account the pressure of career and family; my family and I have always been the division of labor and cooperation in the family, he does not have the traditional concept of women should take more care of the family, We live together as the concept of a "partner," and we respect and understand each other.
And when our children were still young, I was also grateful to my mother-in-law and my own mother for their willingness to take care of them. Even when we were in the United States, they would take turns and allow my children to stay with their parents There is always a family background when women are busy with work, and whether or not women can develop careers in the workplace. Family support is really a very important factor. Although I can not spend a lot of time with my children and their daily life and future development I still think it very much. I think having children is similar to taking people at work, we need to look at their abilities and sexual orientation and encourage them to develop their own interests.
What is your most proud achievement in your career?
After employment, I will try my best to do my best no matter what my work is done. It is not just to let the supervisor be satisfied, but to see what it takes to be the whole project or what the company needs most. After I graduated from the first ADI job in the United States, this historic company gives young engineers a great deal of room to think independently and not overly rely on tools, which allowed me to model component physics (solid) (modeling) has accumulated a solid foundation.
Entering TSMC after returning to Taiwan, when it was not as big as it was now, it had established good discipline and quality requirements for team members and provided me with a creative environment. At that time, TSMC What I needed was component modeling, and I was able to contribute my lessons learned from the US Later, I also participated in the development of RF CMOS process technology to prove that the RF components can be ICs; Prove that Taiwan can make the world's top RF IC.
Do you think it is necessary to encourage women to invest in science and technology and pursue greater achievements?
I do not have any good advice on education or system, and for young women who are interested in science and technology and who want to develop their careers, my advice is to "keep everything in mind," and everyone needs to be alive Meaning, contribute to the community, so if you set your ambition, despite the elders or people around have different opinions, or should be determined to their own goals, brave forward, your life is your own choice.
From the other half, but also a testimony partner
Ma Dijun, chairman of Li Ji Electronic: She is very focused on anything, the pattern of thinking, but also pay attention to detail, this is her most unique place; I have always known that she is a very good person, in addition to the ability is also very strong Willing to pay, Li-plot can go step by step to now have a good development is not easy, we cherish the opportunity to have a business together.
