Microchip Introduces New 8-Bit Microcontroller with Integrated Core Independent Peripherals

Microchip Technology Inc. today announced the addition of eight 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) to the PIC18 family of products that combine a controller area network (CAN) bus with a large number of core independent peripherals CIP) not only enhances system functionality, but also allows designers to more easily develop CAN-based applications without adding complex software. For more information on these two new PIC18 K83 devices, visit www. microchip.com/k83.

A key benefit of using a K83 MCU in a CAN-based system is that CIP provides a deterministic response to real-time events, reducing design time and is easy to configure with the MPLAB® Code Configurator (MCC) tool. The family of products is ideally suited for applications that use CAN in the medical, industrial and automotive markets such as electric operating tables, asset tracking, ultrasound machines, automatic conveyors and automotive accessories, etc. In accomplishing a task, writing and verifying the entire software routine System designers can find it much easier to configure hardware-based peripherals, which can save a lot of time.

Steve Drehobl, vice president of Microchip's 8-bit MCUs product group, said: "The ability to configure MCUs with just a few keystrokes in the MCC will change the way you design CAN, using the same tools found in other PIC® microcontrollers using the K83 family of CIP for easy access to communications, smart analog, and low power. '

15 time-saving CIPs in the PIC18 K83 device include: Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) to support memory scans to ensure non-volatile memory integrity; direct memory access (DMA) to enable memory-to-peripheral (WWDT) for system reset triggering; 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC2) with computational capability to support automatic analog signal analysis for real-time system response ; Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG) to enable efficient synchronous switching of motor control. Development Support The new product is powered by the MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC), a freeware plug-in that provides a graphical interface that is designed for your application to configure peripherals and features. The MCC is included with Microchip's downloadable MPLAB X Integration Development Environment (IDE), and in the cloud-based MPLAB Xpress IDE. The Curiosity High Pin Count (HPC) Development Board (Part # DM162136) also supports this family.

Availability The PIC18F25K83 with 32 KB of Flash is available in samples and quantities from 10,000 are available in bulk. PIC18F26K83 with 64 KB of Flash is also available for sampling and 10,000 in bulk. These models are available in 28-pin SPDIP, SOIC, SSOP, UQFN and QFN packages.
